Living in the lap of Luxury
This week, Boston band The Luxury plays The Lucky Dog. Next week, the band opens for Coldplay, arguably the biggest band in the world at the moment. But does The Luxury, who won the coveted opening slot in an online contest, have what it takes to hold up next to the chart-dominating British rockers? Judging by songs like the soulful and searing "Next in Line," or the melancholy, percussion-driven "Simple," it seems a safe bet. This is serious-minded, intensely personal indie rock with enough of an edge to cross over toward the hard-rock crowd. And just when the band's in danger of taking itself too seriously, it puts out an entirely earnest cover of Men at Work's awesome nugget "Overkill." The Luxury plays with Ari Band and Skullfunked at 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, at The Lucky Dog Music Hall, 89 Green St., Worcester. $7. 21 and up.
